What's SOM-V?

SOM-V stands for „software of precision audio monitor visualization“, also Som translates into "sound" in the portuguese language. A name I came up with.

The tool is used to visualize, cluster and label huge data sets of wildlife audio recordings. The visuals can be used for publications to monitor the health of the Amazon rainforest.

SOM-V, an intuitive tool for bioacoustic researchers.

Problem Statement

Our user persona Gabriel has collected numerous datasets of rainforest sounds. To progress, he needs an intuitive and easy to use tool to summarize his results fast and efficiently.

SCROLL TO SEE SOLUTION(S)

Problem: It is not clear when and which steps must be taken. It is also unclear which steps are optional.

Solution: A clear description and arrangement of the elements guides the user through the interface. In addition, optional buttons or fields are grayed out or only become visible when interaction is required or possible.

Steps that need to be taken

Problem: The user needs to have explanatory information regarding terminology and possibilities and, as is usual in this field of work, an introductory explanation of the user interface.

Solution: The description of the user interface can be called up again at any time. By working with pop-up windows it is also possible to use additional actions.

Pop-up windows

Problem: Once all settings have been made, the user needs space for the 3- and 2-dimensional visualizations to inspect the cluster and other data.

Solution: The left-hand section can be minimized to give full freedom and space. The option becomes available after the last step has been completed.
